The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Monday announced the recall of about 2.3 million promotional toys distributed by McDonald’s in its Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals. The toys—Hello Kitty-themed whistles—feature detachable components that could pose a choking hazard to young children, according to the CPSC’s recall notice. Another 200,000 units distributed in Canada were also recalled.
McDonald’s received two reports of choking incidents, one involving a child who required medical attention. According to CNN, the fast-food chain had recovered 70 percent of the whistles as of Monday. “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our customers, and this includes the toys we offer them,” said McDonald’s in a statement.
The toys were distributed from October 2014 through the first week of November 2014. McDonald’s noted that no other toys in its current Hello Kitty promotion were affected by the recall.
